Italian citizenship

Italian citizenship by residence on the Italian territory

Granting of Italian citizenship

Italian citizenship can be granted by decree of the President of the Republic, after consulting the Council of State, on the proposal of the Minister of the Interior:

b) an adult foreigner adopted by an Italian citizen who has been legally residing in the territory of the Italian Republic for at least five years following adoption;

c) the foreigner who has served, even abroad, for at least five years under the Italian government;

d) to a citizen of a member state of the European Communities if he has legally resided for at least four years in the territory of the Italian Republic;

e) a stateless person who has been legally residing for at least five years in the territory of the Italian Republic;

f) to the foreigner who has been legally residing for at least ten years in the territory of the Italian Republic.

Issue – Renewal – Update of Residence Permits and Residence Cards

A residence permit must be applied for (depending on the visa obtained and the existing provisions) at the Police Headquarters of the province where the foreigner is actually based within 8 working days of his/her entry into Italy.

Renewal of a residence permit (where allowed) may be applied for at the Police Headquarters of the province where the foreigner is actually based 60 days before its expiry date.
